The former “Keranis Tobacco Factory” complex is one of the most iconic industrial buildings at the entrance of Piraeus, and its history is closely linked to the economic and social development of the area. The complex has been inactive for 20 years, leaving a noticeable urban void in a strategic axis of the city. This architectural study, for the reuse of the complex, aims to utilize the existing shell and effectively reintegrate it into modern city life. The proposal redesigns the complex as an urban hub for housing, work, and social life, capable of functioning as a new center of life for Piraeus. In this context, 408 new apartments are being created, with integrated modern commercial and communal uses such as a food market, a gym, offices, as well as leisure areas such as cafes, restaurants, and green spaces, while the roof of the building will feature a roof garden with unique views of Athens’ skyline and cityscapes. The central axes of the architectural proposal are the respectful preservation and enhancemnet of the historical and architectural identity of the building, combined with the integration of modern principles for sustainability and energy efficiency. The redesign of the complex creates significant social and economic added value, reactivating a critical urban axis, strengthening Piraeus’ position within the modern urban environment and the overall dynamics of Attica.
